The Jazz Age

By Mike Perry

The Jazz Age is a name applied to the period from the end of the First World War in 1919 to the Great Depression of the early 1930s – the period also know as the ‘Roaring Twenties’. The Jazz Age takes its name from the emergence of jazz music into the mainstream of American culture, and its spread to Europe and the United Kingdom in the early 1920s.
Although named and remembered for its music, the Jazz Age was a time of enormous social and technological change throughout the Western World. The excesses of the flappers and, in America, Prohibition, were balanced by important social reform such as the emancipation of women.
The emergence of radio as a popular communications medium in the early 1920s meant that for the first time in history ideas and opinions could be rapidly and widely disseminated, opening the door to the ‘consumer culture’ we know enjoy.
A key cultural event of the mid-1920s was the staging of the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1925. Intended as a showplace for French artistic achievement, the ‘modern design’ on display at the exhibition was to give rise to the term ‘Art Deco’ that was to dominate industrial and domestic design up to and through the 1930s and 1940s. ‘Jazz’, a pattern of the famous ‘Royal Winton’ pottery neatly links the spirit of the Jazz Age with Art Deco design.

Thank you for sharing this story of the Jazz age, Mike.
That was just before my time, but people my age were certainly influenced by it.
